1)Along with medical nutritional therapy and insulin, exercise is the third component to successfully treating diabetes. Exercise, like insulin, lowers blood glucose levels, assists in maintaining normal lipid levels, and increases circulation.
• Metabolic control before exercise: Avoid exercise if fasting glucose levels are greater than 250 mg/dl and ketosis is present. Eat added carbohydrates if glucose levels are less than 100 mg/dl.
• Blood glucose monitoring before and after exercise: identify when changes in insulin of food intake are necessary. Learn the blood glucose response to different exercise conditions.
• Food intake: Consume added carbohydrates as needed to avoid hypoglycemia. Carbohydrate-based foods should be readily available during and after exercise
While choosing an exercise, person should keep in mind that it should put undue stress on his feet. Hence, exercises like walking, swimming or bicycling must be the appropriate choices. Person should try to avoid activities like running or jumping that could injure his feet. Patient should remember to warm up and cool down before and after exercising and he/she should always wear comfortable footwear. During walking or jogging, person should be very sure that his shoes fit well and are designed for the activity, which the person is performing. Person should be alert for blisters.
Person should try to exercise at the same time every day and for the same duration. This will help him controlling his blood sugar. It is mainly recommended to exercise at least three times a week for about 30 to 45 minutes.
